Ladera Grill resides in the historic Skeels Building on Monterey and Third Street in downtown Morgan Hill. The building was originally a residential hotel and restaurant operated by Harry and Cynthia Skeels from 1925 to 1948.
In 1926, the Skeels welcomed Swedish Crown Prince Gustav Adolph and his wife Crown Princess Louise, who were in town to dedicate the new 106-acre Sveadal resort in nearby Uvas Canyon. After a formal procession down Monterey Road, the royal couple checked in to the Skeels Hotel and warmly greeted the crowd of more than 500 local citizens from the balcony of their second-story room.
In 1992, the historic hotel was completely rebuilt as a mixed-use building with apartments upstairs and a modern commercial/restaurant space on the ground floor. The Morgan Hill Historical Society retained the building’s original flagpole, which has been reinstalled on the roof of the new building. Dan has been involved in technology-oriented businesses for more than 40 years, predominantly in executive management roles. His past experience has included CEO and Chairman of both SEEQ Technology and Virage Logic. In the latter phase of his tech career, Dan served on multiple public company boards, including Cypress Semiconductor, Freescale Semiconductor, Actel Corporation, Mentor Graphics, ON Semiconductor, SEEQ Technology and Virage Logic amongst others.
Dan has been a South County resident for more than 35 years. He is an avid hiker and amateur photographer, and has a special love for our Northern California wild lands.
Ladera Grill is his first restaurant adventure.
Morgan’s formal education centered around science and finance, and the bulk of his business career was in the Information Technology area, working with EDP companies such as Perot Systems. In 2011, at the request of his father, Morgan left the IT industry and joined the founding team at Ladera Grill. In addition to his front management work, Morgan is responsible for all aspects of IT and POS System management, general maintenance, payroll, finance, accounts receivable and accounts payable.
In his spare time, Morgan enjoys cooking, hiking and backpacking.
Before excellence can be attained, there must be passion. Tony’s life is the embodiment of that statement. For over two decades, his passion and quiet competence has resulted in the creation of a remarkable and varied menu set. Tony honed his skills at Birk’s Steak and Chop House as sous chef, and as kitchen manager for Gordon Biersch in downtown San Jose and Mama Mi’s of Morgan Hill. In 2002, Tony became the Owner/Chef for Giancarlos of Morgan Hill, until joining Ladera Grill in 2011.
SUSAN FUGATE MARSH
Susan has been in the Wine and Hospitality business for over 20 years. After leaving her position in Retail Management to stay home with her children for many years, Susan decided to reenter the work force and pursue a career that was inline with her passion for all things wine. She began in restaurants and has since worked in every facet of the business including Direct to Consumer Sales, Winery Management, Distributor Management, National Sales. In 2012, Susan returned to the restaurant side of things , which was always where her true passion lay. She is a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a Certified Specialist of Wine. She loves working with the staff at Ladera, training and traveling with them to wineries throughout California on their quest to learn more.
Susan’s philosophy in creating the wine list at Ladera is to keep things both simple and exciting. She strives to have wines from multiple regions throughout the world and is especially excited to offer wines that come from a region where that varietal originated or shows its best expression.
She also believes in showcasing some of the local gems found right here in our own back yard. She believes in changing the list periodically to create variety and an opportunity for our guests to experience new wines.
In her spare time, Susan enjoys spending time with family, traveling with her husband and practicing Yoga.
Banquet and Event Manager
Katrina has been in the hospitality industry for over 15 years. She started out as a busser when she was just 15 years old at the Inn at Tres Pinos. She worked her way up, hosting, serving, catering, and even helping in the kitchen. She moved to New York and landed a job with an incredible hospitality group at The Smith (Midtown). After surviving a brutally cold winter, Katrina moved back to sunny California, where she began working at Left Bank on Santana Row. She worked as a lead server until finding her home at Ladera Grill. Katrina brings her 15 years of diverse restaurant experience to Ladera Grill as our Event Coordinator and manager.
In her spare time, Katrina enjoys cooking for her fiancée and his two children, and curling up with a nice glass of wine and a good book.
Rene has been with Ladera from our founding. He has been in the hospitality industry since he was 16 years old, rising from entry-level positions to his current management role at Ladera. Because of his passion for customer service, Rene continues to love the direct interaction with patrons as well as all aspects of management, so our guests are just as likely to interact with Rene as their server, particularly during our high volume days.
Rene has demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a restaurant – from personnel management to customer service programs. His passion for service has been invaluable in establishing the training and management programs for our serving staff. Rene works hard to make the dining experience at Ladera uniquely enjoyable.
In his spare time, Rene loves to spend time with his nephews and niece, taking his dogs on jaunts to the beach and to our local trails, wine tasting and fine dining.
Front of House Manager
Chris Provini is our most recent addition to the Ladera Grill family. He comes to us with over 13 years of experience in the service industry, including 6 years in management. Before joining our team, Chris managed operations of the world famous Original Joe’s of San Jose. Chris’s priority is to ensure Ladera Grill’s patrons experience a welcoming, courteous environment that is revered for its quality and always exceeds their expectations. Being a native of Morgan Hill, Chris is elated to contribute more of his time to the community he knows best. He is an avid golfer and skier; his daughter and career keep him pretty busy, but when he does get a spare moment, you can usually find him on the green, or on the mountain.
Front of House Manager
Peter joined the food service industry in 2005 where he managed local pizzerias for eight years. He quit stretching the dough and made the transition to fine dining when he joined the Ladera team in 2012. As time went on he worked through the ranks of front of house positions, where he was able to fully appreciate each role and really see how they contributed to the daily operations of the restaurant. From bussing tables to running food, serving and bartending, Peter joined the management team in 2015. He has played an important role in daily operations and training of new employees. Peter is an avid hockey fan and Disney enthusiast, so when he is not at work you can probably find him at a Sharks game or on an adventure traveling his way around the world.
